Secure Source works to ensure a reliable, affordable and long-term source of high-quality contraceptive products. The increasing cost of contraceptives worldwide and the lack of funding for family planning services motivated three Planned Parenthood affiliates to create this market-driven not-for-profit. The goal of Secure Source is to counteract the increased costs of and decreased funding for reproductive service products for under served women globally. Structural changes in the pharmaceutical industry, resulting from financial and market pressures, make it increasingly difficult to negotiate affordable, long-term prices on contraceptives. In the face of challenging economic times, there is an increased demand for affordable contraceptives for women. Oral contraceptives remain the most frequently used contraceptive by women in the US, with demand estimated at 6.8 billion cycles over the next 15 years. Secure Source partners with direct-service agencies and negotiates on their behalf with domestic and international manufacturers of high-quality contraceptive products. By functioning as a buying group for its members, Secure Source has successfully negotiated the lowest price in the country for its first products, offering a highly valuable service to both patients and providers. In establishing relationships with international pharmaceutical companies, it ensures the long-term availability of adequate volumes of oral contraceptives at an affordable price.
