Strengthening Democratic Values
  Strengthening Democratic Values

We support groups working to strengthen democratic values by funding research, public education and advocacy. We fund organizations that have the capacity to respond to issues and opportunities for policy change and that are connected to one of our priority areas.

We appreciate the freedoms and values that make this country great: freedom of speech and expression, the freedom to practice one’s faith, the freedom to make choices about reproductive health and to freely vote and participate in political processes.

Democratic Values

Democratic Values

A fair and pluralistic democracy embraces opportunity for all, as well as respect and understanding among people of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.

All people, regardless of age, race, sex, economic standing or sexual orientation are equally important and have the right to realize their economic, social and personal potential. Women, in particular, have been shown to participate significantly less in the democratic and civic process than men. Without the collective voice and participation of women, they will continue to be affected by public policies that do not adequately address educational and economic opportunities, health, safety and reproductive rights.

We seek to create both the possibilities and demand for development of systemic solutions to these problems as well as the public awareness needed for implementation. We believe that permanent sustainable change requires re-examining old policies and advocating for new and improved ones. It also involves investing in solid ideas and framing policy debates so that decision-makers and the public alike understand the real outcomes of public policy decisions and the role of effective government.
